Tree Trimming in Punta Gorda, FL
Punta Gorda is the county seat and the only incorporated city in Charlotte County, directly across the Peace River from Port Charlotte. Same storms, same trees, and a different set of rules.

The storms went through here first
The eye of Hurricane Charley passed over Punta Gorda in August 2004, with the eyewall striking the city and Port Charlotte. Eighteen years later Hurricane Ian made its second landfall just south of the city near Pirate Harbor. Charley took down a great many of the city's trees, so a lot of what shades its yards now was planted since and is around twenty years old: young enough to shape, old enough that the shaping is overdue on trees nobody has touched since they went in. A tree in that age range is where structural pruning pays most. Reducing a competing leader, or the long limb heading for the roof, is a small job now and a large one in ten years.
Canal lots and salt
Punta Gorda Isles and Burnt Store Isles are built on canals running out to Charlotte Harbor. On those lots, salt spray and wind off open water favour the tough species: cabbage palms, live oaks, sea grape. The palms do most of the work in these yards and need trimming every year. Where a lot backs onto mangroves, state rules on mangrove trimming apply, and the work above ten feet needs a professional mangrove trimmer.
City rules, not county rules
Because Punta Gorda is a city, Charlotte County's tree permit does not govern trees inside the city limits. The city has its own code, and we have not summarised it here because we could not confirm the current wording. Check with the City of Punta Gorda before removing a tree, and ask the company quoting whether they have pulled a city permit before. The state rule that lets an owner remove a documented high-risk tree on a single-family lot without a local permit applies here as it does everywhere in Florida.

Punta Gorda questions
Is Punta Gorda covered by the county tree permit?
No. Inside the city limits the City of Punta Gorda's rules apply. Addresses in ZIP 33980 and parts of 33982 and 33983 can be outside the city, though, so check which side of the line you are on before applying anywhere.
Do palms near the harbour need trimming more often?
Not necessarily more often, but they do more of the work in waterfront yards, so an annual trim matters. Wind-tolerant palms do well here; the dead fronds and seed stalks still need to come off before the season.
Is it worth pruning a twenty-year-old oak?
Usually yes. That is the age when a structural prune is still a modest job and still changes how the tree grows for the next forty years.
