Storm-Damaged Tree Removal in Port Charlotte
When a tree is on the house, the order is people, then power lines, then the roof. The tree itself comes fourth.

The first hour
- Get everyone out of the rooms under the tree, and stay out.
- Assume every wire near the tree is live. Report lines down to FPL and keep well clear.
- Photograph the tree, the damage and the lot from several angles before anything moves.
- Call your insurer to open a claim, and ask what they need from a tree company.
- Then call for the tree. Say whether it is on the roof, a vehicle or a line.
Do not try to cut a tree off a roof yourself. A trunk resting on a house is under load in ways that are hard to read, and a cut in the wrong place can drop it through the roof or swing it at the person holding the saw.
What happened after Ian
Hurricane Ian's eye passed over southeast Port Charlotte on September 28, 2022, after its second landfall near Punta Gorda. For weeks afterwards every tree crew in Charlotte County was working on trees through roofs and across driveways, and Charlotte County's debris contractor went on collecting through the following spring, past 4.7 million cubic yards. The lesson for the next one: a tree on the house gets a crew within days, a tree across the back yard may wait weeks, and a routine trim waits until the emergency work is done.
No permit for a tree the storm brought down
Charlotte County's environmental permitting guide says no permit is needed for a tree felled by a storm on a developed property with existing structures, and that once a tree is down there is no need to review its health. It suggests documenting the tree before it is removed. A tree that is damaged but still standing is a different case and may still need a permit, or an arborist's risk assessment.
How a tree comes off a roof
Usually with a crane or a bucket truck. The tree is rigged and lifted off in sections so its weight comes off the roof under control rather than rolling across it. A tarp goes on as soon as the hole is clear. After a big storm, cranes are the bottleneck in the county, which is one reason getting on a list early matters.
Hangers and leaners
A broken limb caught high in a crown, called a hanger, can come down days later on a calm afternoon. A tree that has started to lean after a storm, with soil heaved up on the far side, has broken roots and is a removal. Both are reasons to keep people and cars out from under the tree until someone has looked at it.
Storm-chasers
Out-of-state crews arrive after every major Florida storm. Some are good. Some take a deposit and leave. Ask for a certificate of insurance that names you, a written price for the whole job including haul-away, and a local address. Do not sign over your insurance payment to anyone. Florida law limits post-loss assignment of insurance benefits, and your insurer can explain what applies to your policy.
If a tree is on your house or across a line now, call. Say so in the first sentence and it is handled as an emergency.
Common questions
Will insurance pay to remove a fallen tree?
Often, when the tree has damaged an insured structure such as the house, a detached garage or a fence. A tree that fell and hit nothing is often not covered beyond a small allowance. Policies differ, so ask your insurer before work starts and keep the photographs.
The tree fell from my neighbour's yard. Whose problem is it?
In general the insurer for the property that was damaged handles the claim, regardless of where the tree grew, unless the tree was visibly dead or neglected beforehand. Your insurer is the first call.
Can storm debris go out with the bulk pickup?
After a declared disaster the county runs separate storm-debris collection and publishes the rules for it. In normal times, curbside yard waste is limited to pieces under six feet long, ten inches thick and forty pounds, so a whole tree needs hauling. Check what is included before work starts.
