Tree Trimming in Venice, FL

Venice is the far edge of the area, about twenty miles up the coast in Sarasota County. It has one of the clearer residential tree rules in the region, and one important exception to it.

What Venice exempts, and what it does not

The City of Venice's published guidance says single-family lots of half an acre or less are exempt from most of its tree code. The exceptions are the ones that matter: removing a heritage tree, a Venetian tree or a canopy-road tree needs a permit. A heritage tree is a native tree 30 inches or more in diameter measured at 54 inches above the ground. Venetian trees are ones City Council has designated for their significance. Pruning a branch of 10 inches or more from a heritage or Venetian tree also needs a permit, and in canopy-road protection zones the threshold is a branch of 2 inches. So the large old oak on a Venice lot is exactly the tree that is not exempt. Check with the city before trimming one hard, never mind removing it.

Older trees on the island and near the Gulf

Venice is older than most of what surrounds it, and the streets near downtown and on the island carry mature live oaks and palms that have been through several storms. Those trees are mostly worth keeping and mostly need the same things: dead wood out, end-weight off the long limbs, and clearance over roofs. Close to the Gulf, salt and wind keep the crowns smaller and the tough natives do best.

Venice questions

Do I need a permit to trim my tree in Venice?

Not for most trees on a single-family lot of half an acre or less. You do for pruning a branch 10 inches or larger from a heritage or Venetian tree, and for branches 2 inches or larger in a canopy-road protection zone.

How do I know if my tree is a heritage tree?

Measure around the trunk at about four and a half feet above the ground and divide by 3.14. A native tree 30 inches or more across at that height is a heritage tree under the city's definition.
