How to Hire a Tree Company in Port Charlotte
Updated 2026-10 · Port Charlotte, FL

There is no state licence
Florida does not license tree trimmers or tree removal companies. There is no state number to look up, which means the usual checks fall to you. Charlotte County businesses should hold a local business tax receipt, but that is a tax registration, not a test of competence. What actually separates a sound company from a pickup and a chainsaw is insurance, experience and the way they quote.
Insurance first
General liability
This pays if a limb goes through your roof or your neighbour's. Ask for a certificate of insurance sent by the insurer or the agent, not a photocopy, naming you as the certificate holder.
Workers' compensation
Tree work is among the most dangerous trades there is. If an uninsured worker is hurt on your property, you can end up in the middle of it. Ask for proof of workers' compensation coverage, or the company's state exemption, and check it on the Florida Division of Workers' Compensation coverage lookup.
Credentials that mean something
An ISA Certified Arborist has passed the International Society of Arboriculture's exam and keeps up continuing education; you can look one up on the ISA's website. It matters most for diagnosis: whether a tree is declining, whether it can be saved, and the signed risk assessment that Florida law accepts in place of a local removal permit for a high-risk tree. Plenty of good crews are not certified, but the person making the call on a large tree over the house ideally is.
What a good estimate looks like
In writing, tree by tree: what is being done to each, in plain words. Whether wood and brush are hauled. Whether stumps are ground and how deep. Who handles any permit. When payment is due. A good company will also tell you when a tree does not need work, or when the problem is the base rather than the crown.
Red flags
- Offers to top trees or "cut them back for the storm". Topping is prohibited in Charlotte County.
- Offers to strip palms to a few fronds.
- Climbing spikes on trees and palms that are only being pruned.
- A large cash deposit up front.
- No written estimate, or one that says only "trim trees".
- A crew that knocks on doors after a storm with no local address.

Questions to ask on the visit
What would you do to this tree, and why? What would you not do? Is anything here a risk you would flag even if I were not paying for it? How will you protect the cage, the roof and the lawn? Who will be on site, and is the person who quoted also the one running the job? A company that answers those without hesitation has usually done this a long time.
Where to go next
Common questions
Is a landscaping company the same as a tree company?
Some landscapers do tree work well, many do small trees and palms only. For a large tree over a structure, ask specifically about their climbing and rigging experience and their insurance for that work.
Should I pay in full before the work?
No. A modest deposit for a large job is normal; full payment is due when the work is done and the site is cleaned up to the standard agreed.
